Walking
With the South West Coast Path nearby the opportunities for walking are endless. It is just a short (20 mins) walk down the valley from the Barn and you are on the coast. Large scale OS maps are provided to help you both plan and enjoy your walks, and we are happy to advise of routes to take depending on your interest and ability. The coast of West Penwith is stunning, with its towering granite cliffs, turquoise seas, fabulous maritime flora and industrial archaeology from the tin mining era. See the Places of Interest page for more information on this.
Cycling
West Cornwall offers opportunities for cycling for all levels and abilities. For those who enjoy road cycling it is possible to explore the extensive network of quiet lanes away the main routes whatever the time of year. The coastal road from St Just to St Ives must surely rank as one of the most scenic cycle routes in the area, with cafes (and ice cream stops) at both ends and in the middle. What could be better?
If your interest lies in off-road cycling then the network of byeways and bridleways offer some superb days out and there are some superb cycle trails which criss-cross West Cornwall using the old mining tracks and tramways. One of our favourites is the Coast-to-Coast (Portreath to Devoran) route which traverses Cornwall from north to south. Not only are the views stunning, the gradients generally gentle, and very little is on roads, but there are several welcoming cafes dotted along the route. Bike hire is available at both ends if you fancy a day out but don’t want to bring your own bikes.
For more information see the “IntoCornwall” website.
There are also opportunities for more challenging mountain biking on specially made tracks at Cardinham Woods near Bodmin. One of the more popular routes is the 12km Bodmin Beast cycle trail which aims to set the benchmark for single-track trails in Cornwall. Well worth a visit.
